email from hotter than hellPosted Wednesday, August 06th, 2008 Dear Simon,
I would like to wish you a big 'Thank-You' to you for the Gig of Saturday 2nd August at Thomas Tripp in Christchurch.
The only problem we had was the Sound Spec, but we had a great night.
The Sound Engineer was a real nice guy, but i dont think he knew what to do with our exact Sound Specification? I think the PA might not have been powerful enough for the Kiss related (Heavy/Hard Rock) Sound?
Peavy are a good Guitar Amplifier, but not a PA System, as their Frequenceys can sound different.
(Please dont shout at me for saying that & its just Sound Jargon. lol!).
Seriously, on behalf of my Band Members and our Management, i would like to thank alot your great staff for their sincere hospitality and kindness to us. We honestly really couldnt ask for much more....
It was a great Turn Out and alot of people have been Emailing us and asking when 'Hotter Than Hell' will be coming back to Christchurch.
Please see below, a guy who was a Founder of the first UK Kiss Fanzine, who attended our show via our Myspace:
Hi Guys,
Was at your gig in Christchurch last night, the only person with a Kiss T Shirt I think (standing in front of Gene and singing every song all night!)
YOU ROCKED!!!! I had an awesome time - I've seen Kiss seven times, but I enjoyed myself just as much last night:-) It was great to be in the front row, something that is very difficult to achieve at an actual Kiss show. I have been a Kiss fan for thirty years this year and used to run the Kiss UK Attack fanzine back in the early nineties.
Really hope you can come back again next tour (and that the lack of rock fans in the audience didn't put you off, at least it got busy-very busy!!!), my wife was very disappointed that she couldn't come due to sickness.
MANY THANKS AGAIN - See you next time....
Your Bournemouth Rock City Fans-
Ragnar
Thank you again Simon for having us and hope to speak to you soon for a 2009 date?
THOUGHT YOU MAY LIKE TO READ THIS EMAIL I RECEIVED.
REGARDS
SIMON

hotter than hellPosted Tuesday, August 05th, 2008 Hello,
Just wanted to say what a great time I had at the Kiss Tribute gig on Saturday night. I really hope you can get them back again in the future. I’ve seen Kiss seven times, so know their show well and Hotter Than Hell did a superb job.
On the subject of Rainbow, I found this great looking and sounding tribute band while searching on the net. http://www.rainbowrising.net/
I’m sure they could pull in quite a few rock fans too. Would be good to see them at Late & Live if you could sort something out.
Anyway, cheers for now. See you next time.

Re: Hotter than hellPosted Tuesday, August 05th, 2008 Ok guys, hit a nerve here have i? Ray thinks I don't know the difference between a good and bad sound? Well best sound around here is at The Joiners in Southampton, so if I were you I would try a night out there. I said many people i spoke to, not all thought there were issues with the sound. So both of you can put your toys back in the pram now. Yes Ray you, as i are entitled to our opinions. I just felt that it was not as good as it could have been. Who knows' maybe the band had an off night? After all they had to deal with idiots jumping on the stage too! Love, Tattie. - Tattie
Hotter than hellPosted Tuesday, August 05th, 2008 Right, first things first. It seems the soundman is getting bad press from 1 persons opinion who deemed it necessary to speak on behalf of everyone there, well cheers tattie. I was there and disagree totally. The sound was absolutely fine, maybe some trouble at the start but overall was good as always at this venue. The only place that has better sound than here is kyps and thats down to hardware not engineer. Maybe you should go to the gander to check out bad sound just so you know the difference!
- Ray P
Re: Hotter Than HellPosted Monday, August 04th, 2008 As the sound engineer for the Thomas Tripp I felt I should respond to the message posted by 'Tattie' regarding his/ her experience on the Kiss Tribute night. I do wholeheatredly strive to ensure that both the sound out front and on stage meets the requirements of both the audience and musicians. Throughout the night I was liasing with the Kiss technician to ensure that the musicians were satisfied.Initially the band did requiure more vocal foldback and i rectified this to the best of my ability.I am not always behind the desk because I like to listen to the sound from all listening perspectives throughout the entire venue to ensure a good balance as there is noticable variances in the acoustics.I do honestly try and obtain as much feedback as possibly on the subject of the sound on every gig that I do. I found that the general consensus of people were genuinely happy with the night. I fully appreciate your feedback about what you considered to be a sub-standard sound quality. However, I also think you should recognise that it is solely your opinion and I don't think you have the right to speak on behalf of all the people who regularly enjoy music at the venue. As a venue we have had many compliments about the standards of entertainment we provide, nearly all the bands we put on freely compliment us on the sound quality and some have even cited us for making them sound the best they ever have! In conclusion I would like to thank 'Tattie' for his/ her comment and I will take it into consideration as my main aim is to make sure that everyone has a great night out at our events.
Ps. If you are going to leave feedback please don't write non-specific comments such '...the sound was crap' as this totally undermines the point you're trying to make. - Christian James
Hotter Than Hell?Posted Sunday, August 03rd, 2008 Soap box time i'm afraid. Just witnessed The Kiss Tribute and i have to say firstly, Voodoo Vegas were cool although the sound was crap. Secondly i felt really sorry for the Kiss tribute. They too were plagued with sound difficulties all evening, and obviously had very little coming from the foldback. Credit to them tho' they stuck with it and tried their best. When the guitarist (Ace) tried to get the engineer's attention, turns out the engineer was not there, no-one at the desk! And not for the first time either. Also During Black Diamond the drummer (Peter) sings lead vocal. There was a bit of a problem here as his Microphone was off for at least half the song!! I have to ask, why is the sound balance always so bad in this venue? I have seen many bands here and there are always sound issues, This is not good practise. Try and sort it out guys or you will lose paying punters. Also admittedly the band were late on stage but all the pissed up chavs piled in around 12 and pushed their way past the true fans to the front and started jumping on the stage. We paid good money to see a band on stage, not Joe 90 look alike pissed wankers! He was lucky he did not get a kicking. Where were security? Probably chatting up birds at the door. Many people felt let down after the gig so i thought i would voice my opinion for them. Please sort the out the sound and the engineer or as a venue the Late and Live will become more of a last resort and just another late night crap disco. Do we want another venue going down the tubes? It's your choice, cos' at the moment it's a sinking ship! - Tattie

guns 2 rosesPosted Thursday, July 17th, 2008 have u actualy seen the band then jc??, or just looked at the link???
i dont even like gnr personaly, but as the guy who has to pay them i wouldnt be putting them on again if they hadnt covered the costs last time! as paul says, our audience seems to like them.
maybe the live experience shows them in a better light than this phone recording. if u would like the opportunity to experience this... i would be more than happy to give you two free tickets to watch them at the club to hopefully impress you more. now i cant be fairer than that can i?? - simon
GUNS 2 ROSESPosted Thursday, July 17th, 2008 JC, of course you have a right to your opinion sir, and furthermore free speech is what this great nation was founded upon.
However in my defence i would have to say that this is the second time they will have played here, and the first time they went down extremely well, and pulled quite a few people in to boot.
I am not going to say i am an expert on guns and roses music particularly, but the public seem to like them, and as such i am satisfied that they are good enough to play here.
The ticket price is naturally reflected in the fee bands charge, and the last time i looked, a tenner isnt exactly a lot of money anyway, relative to other things.
I notice you didnt put your full name by the way...any reason for that?
Lastly,i as you were speaking of tests, i suggest you take a spelling one, since you have made several glaring errors on your post.
On my desk tomorrow morning please! - Paul Hills

They are totally appauling & should leave the \"REAL\" GNR alone instead of taking the piss!
They are a karaoke band to say the least & @ a tenner a ticket, well, if you want to throw your money away,... get a sanity test, & while your @ it,... a hearing test!!! - J.C.
GUNS TO ROSESPosted Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 http://www.guns2roses.co.uk/ gives a much better picture of the quality of the band rather than a mobile phone recording!!! They wouldnt have all those gigs booked if they were that bad...surely! - Justin

know any good folk bands??Posted Monday, July 07th, 2008 Hello, as a frequent drinker in the Thomas Tripp when we escaping the bad weather when staying down at Mudeford Beach, I was wondering if you could help me out. I am getting married next April and want a couple of folky musicians to play background music. Unfortunately space is limited to 1 or 2 people playing and am trying to do a little research into local folk bands. As we are not local - out of season anyway - i would really appriciate any help you could give us on any ideas. Thank you for you time and see you soon. Keep up the good work!! - Ellie B
My MessagePosted Monday, July 07th, 2008 Big thanks to funkydory for a magnificent set last saturday. Hope you all enjoyed the festival despite the awful weather. Its a pity the echo chose not to mention the festival all last week in the ents page, but there ya go, c"est la vie. heard it was a very descent turnout anyway. Lets hope the weather is kinder next weekend when the club has the wonderful "creedence recycled", supported by poor boy shuffle.A bit of summery americana is just what we need!!Neddless to say, the music is back to normal, beginning at 9pm,doors 8. cheers - Paul Hills

FUNKYDORY SATPosted Friday, July 04th, 2008 Just a reminder to all those coming to the tripp live tomorrow to see funkydory, that the band will be onstage 11-12-30. This is of course in order to accommodate all those going to the xchurch festival(and why wouldnt you?)which finishes around 10pm.
This is a fairly new band, having just released their first album, but the pedigree is certainly there..funky blues indeed, luvely jubbly! - Paul Hills

A Black Sabbath For The Bishop.Posted Monday, June 30th, 2008 Sack Sabbath’s gig at the Tripp last Saturday was my first involvement in booking bands and I was very pleased to be Justin’s wingman for this event. As I had initially found the band and recommended them, I was keeping my fingers crossed that they would be as good as their reputation led me to believe. As it happened, they exceeded those expectations and turned out to be one of the best tribute bands I have ever seen. I saw Black Sabbath back in 1972 on the Master of Reality tour, but I enjoyed this performance every bit as much. There was a lot of fun being had on stage and “Ozzy” had me laughing out loud on any number of occasions. Tremendous musicianship and a very appreciative, knowledgeable audience made for a fantastic evening. I had a chat with the lead singer after the bands sound-check and he told me the sign of a good gig is when the audience join in with War Pigs…which they did very vocally at the Tripp! It was also great to hear songs like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Snowblind and of course, Iron Man. Paranoid, as you’d expect, brought the house down…my ears have only just stopped ringing! Hopefully, this will be the first of many collaborations between Big Just and The Bishop, so I’m looking forward to more evenings like this. Sack Sabbath had a great time as well, so expect them back before too long!
- The Bishop.

re: gutter ratsPosted Sunday, June 29th, 2008 As a judge at this event, I just thought I’d comment on this post.
“Fantastic battle of the bands tonight, had a great time. But im a bit miffed on the voting, as the band who seemed to have recieved the biggest over all reaction only came FOURTH!!! There response was the best given all evening with perhaps the only call for an enchore out of all the bands playing!! Audience reactions afterwards seemed bemused and confused. we understand the point of scoring from catagories, but when a band obviously win the folks over more than anyone else on the bill, then surely injustice has been done!
- charlotte”
I’ve seen The Gutter Rats a few times at the Tripp now and I thought last Thursday, give or take the odd howler., was the best I had seen them play. Sure, they had a good audience reaction, but, as you say, that wasn’t the only criteria. Personally, I thought the first band on were far and away the best band on the night and I was very surprised that they didn’t win. I placed The Gutter Rats third and the band who won, second. But there were four judges voting independently, so the band who ended up with the most points won…and surely that’s got to be fair?
- The Bishop.
battlePosted Sunday, June 29th, 2008 Following on from the last post I also 'judged' the battle on Thursday & the band I gave the least points came last while the band I gave the most were the winners.Dont know if that makes things any clearer but there were 5 criteria's from memory. - BigRoss40

Heavenly 'Jazz'Posted Thursday, May 29th, 2008 Back in town for the evening (a one-night-only foray, sadly) I was fabulously lucky to find my evening at the Thomas Tripp coinciding with a most delightful young singer/pianist - Jazz - whose voice was simply 'gawjus' and heart-stopping with immense power, feeling, emotion and vulnerability. Her piano playing appeared simple and methodic but every key was struck with delicate and precise timing and this amplified her femininity and vulnerability to perfection.
I feel I must point out that I am in no way related to Jazz, am not her agent, and the £10 she gave me to scribble this review was purely to cover my legitimate expenses (and no, I'm not an MP either!)
If anyone has an itinerary of her forthcoming gigs I'd be grateful to hear.

Passing of Paul HartPosted Thursday, May 15th, 2008 Sadly, paul hart, the founder of the barrelhouse blues club in sturnminster newton, died last week of a heart attack.

He will be sadly missed by the blues community both locally and nationally. - Paul Hills

re chillisPosted Wednesday, January 16th, 2008 Hudson, thanks for the interest, but given the band are doing 2.5 hours there simply wont be the time for a spt act. if they start at 9 thats an 11-30 finish, and we couldnt possibly deprive the late arrivals of their discotheque music now could we...
however, will check out the site and get back to you re a poss spt on another occasion. - Paul Hills

actsPosted Sunday, January 13th, 2008 Nice one Paul-I missed the Foo's tribute @ OFS last year so shall look forward to that one.I reckon if you booked the Jamm you'd get a decent turnout, they usually sell out when they play Kyps & Limehouse Lizzy are prety special whatever your musical preference. On the 'Indie' front Oxford's 9 Stone Cowboy are up & coming while Bristol's Undercut are making a name for themselves currently.Locally can I request Rushing With Apathy,Butcher Blues Foundation(now London),A&E Line,Peeping Toms,Ethel & Southampton's finest Stout.Dont want much do I !!! Can I put myself forward for that 60's DJ slot,I have DJ'd locally these past 5years including Room101 & Longs in Lymington.BigRoss40. - bigross40

meanwhile for those who love 60s music of one stripe or another, come and see the get up on the 26th, together with soul baby. that will be a great austin powers meets motown evening.
also pleased to announce the gene drayton unit back on the 22cd march, and the first gig from the small fakers tribute band on april 12th, and the club debut of the bog rolling stones and nelsons column on the 26th.
Its hard work dj ing 60s stuff, as the tunes change every 2 minutes, but if anyone might be up for an occasional 3 hour 60s disco session in midweek, let us know and will be pleased to oblige. - Paul Hills
ny evePosted Monday, January 07th, 2008 hi all....
glad so many of you had a gr8 night...
apologies about the waiting but ALL the usual staff took the night off and we had to beg, steal and borrow what we could.... mucho thanx to all the guys n gals who helped out and worked.... nobody expected it to get that mad!
as for the food....we paid a LOT of money for the buffet and were astonished by the 'quantity' delivered...not at all what we expected for what we paid and i believe Johnnie will be having a quiet word with them next door to complain... apologies again but if anybody saw what was delivered...that was sposed to be for 200-250 people!!!! i think not!!!
as for the photos i am waiting eagerly for them !?! but i havnt been given any yet....they will go up as soon as i receive them.... indie/punk bands eh...give us some ideas and we will see what we can do....
dont forget our german comic this thursday at our slightly re-scheduled GIGGLES comedy club...and the music starts again weds & this weekend....
happy new ones to you all....

New Years EvePosted Saturday, January 05th, 2008 Great Band and DJ the only things that marred the night were a 45 min wait to be served at the bar where an understandably stressed girl was quite rude when i asked to be served in front of people who had just come to the bar. That said i was served finaly by a lovely girl wish i knew her name who appologised for the delay (good customer service) and she told me she was not even working there just drafted in. The other thing was the advertised buffett Hmmmmm lot of disapointed people looking at empty plates. Just a tip if you cant deliver the promise dont make it in the first place. - Davey
new years evePosted Wednesday, January 02nd, 2008 Brilliant night. Brilliant band, brilliant booze and brilliant birds. Nuff said. - Terry

NYE 2007Posted Tuesday, January 01st, 2008 Really enjoyed ourselves. Thx to all TTLL staff.
But, please, please, please, next time, could we have more bar staff? Many of us waitred soooooo long for a drink, I waited 15 mins upstairs, gave up, then a further 10 mins downstairs, 25mins total!!! It's not fair on the poor staff and not fair on us.
Happy Year and well done on giving us all a great night out.
xxx - Gayle
